Creativity on demand

"Quidi Vidi" acrylic on canvas, 22" x 28" (unfinished version)

I've been painting and doing other such creative things fairly seriously now for about 11 years, and I have to say (from my limited experience in all other things) that having to be creative on demand can be really stressful. Some great ideas or paintings have come about very spontaneously, but most of them need to sit and germinate for a bit before I'm ready to get them on paper or canvas. Sometimes, there is no time for that. It seems to be a bit of a mixed bag this month....a bit of creativity on demand and a bit of harvesting ideas that I've been sitting on for a bit. Had you asked me a few years ago, I would have said creativity on demand is more stressful....but I find being left to your own devices and timelines comes with it's own stress. I think I prefer the demand. It keeps me organized. It's true....if you need something done, give it to a busy person. Or send them to Newfoundland for a painting vacation. Better yet, how about BOTH?

Yesterday I went to the Paint Spot in Edmonton where my show is hung and got to paint on the walls around the paintings. It was SO much fun. Red paint and white walls. Since the show contains mixed media paintings, I just continued the drawings around the paintings like I would have had the canvas the painting was on had been bigger.  There is a little album of how the show looks on my facebook fanpage. All you have to do is become 'like' the 'Justina Smith, Visual Artist' page and you can see it. The album is called "Streets & Avenues".

One show up and another one looming! Can you see what it is? It's a NEWFOUNDLAND painting! Quidi Vidi to be exact and another fair sized one that will just be painted. There is also a little owl painting in the works too...

...and my 30th birthday is in 12 days!
